There used to be a time in the beginning of the Search Engine Optimization world that you could just throw in a couple of meta tags in the html code of your page and mention certain keywords and BAMMM! your website would be on top of search engines, getting traffic.I just met a new business man who happens to be visiting Los Angeles from Oregon. He asked me what I do and I told him Search Engine Optimization and immediately he said "Yes I am familiar with that; so you must be really good with meta tags!" and of course my response was "It has been a long time since meta tags have been out dated".
Meta tags are pieces of html code that you place on your webpages and they are considered by search engines. They are used for search engines to help them with figuring out what that particular webpage is about.
There are many meta tags but the most famous ones are "Description" and "Keywords". Here is how they look behind the scene:

As time goes by, the importance of these meta tags get less and less but I would suggest including them in your pages anyway as it does not hurt to do so. Make sure they are very relevant to the content of that page. For example if you have a page about selling horse brushes, don't try to put keywords in the meta tags like Britney Spears, trying to attract more visitors.
Keep them short, sweet, relevant, and accurate; especially your <> tag.
